The Economics of Waste. Reduce pressure on landfill and your business

Aug 28, 2026

When we follow a linear economic model and continuously send waste to landfill, businesses lose the opportunity to extract value from materials that could otherwise re-enter the economy. Waste management is often viewed as a grudge purchase, when it’s really an opportunity.

With the right waste management plan, your business has the potential to earn rebates on valuable recyclable materials. You also have a partner to help find the appropriate streams and solutions for waste that sits outside traditional recycling, such as e-waste, food and organic waste, and hazardous waste.

Effective waste management can also support your ESG goals, strengthen your sustainability credentials and reduce the amount of material your business sends to landfill.

Unlocking value through Waste Management

All businesses have their own waste management needs and necessitate waste management streams to meet this. Mpact Waste Management covers a range of waste management streams that go beyond traditional waste like paper and packaging. Food waste is one of the causes of rising CO2 emissions in landfills. Food and particularly organic waste can hold value when the right stream is found. We’ve worked with some of our clients to convert food waste into feedstock for livestock.

Our network of suppliers and partners helps us find the right solutions for suitable waste streams, including redirecting certain materials into the production of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). This allows material that might otherwise have gone to landfill to be recovered and used as an industrial input, creating commercial value while reducing reliance on landfill.

Invest in your waste management

A waste audit is the best way to establish your needs as well as on-site requirements to facilitate cost-effective management and collection of your business’s waste. Mpact Waste Management conducts a free waste audit, and our team is not only with you at the start, but throughout your waste management journey.

We assess your business on-site, identify the types of waste you produce, where it’s generated and how it’s currently managed. From there, we establish where value is being lost and where your system can be improved. You could find yourself receiving rebates for valuable material, have improved efficiencies in the disposal or repurposing of waste and have peace of mind that your waste needs are taken care of and you’re playing your part when it comes to reducing pressure on landfill.

Smoother operations and stronger sustainability

Landfill comes at a significant cost. In 2026, the Western Cape Government estimated the final project cost of expanding the Karwyderskraal Regional Landfill Facility at R63.5 million. They also projected the combined operational, rehabilitation and fixed costs at one regional landfill at R366.86 per tonne. In this economic climate, everything adds up. So, it isn’t hard to see why ensuring recyclable packaging and materials find their way back into the circular economy is a better course of action than sending to landfill. And, it benefits our country and your business at large.

Businesses also have a responsibility to manage their waste correctly. Incorrect handling and disposal. – particularly when it comes to hazardous waste, can expose your business to compliance and reputational risks.

Sustainable waste management can also contribute towards broader ESG objectives, strengthen your sustainability credentials and support positive relationships with clients, suppliers and other stakeholders.

And it can all be integrated into your day-to-day operations with the right waste management partner.

The numbers still matter

Effective waste management is about more than simply removing waste from your site. Having visibility of your waste streams through accurate reporting helps you understand where materials are being generated, how much is being recovered and where opportunities exist to improve performance.

With meaningful insights, your business can measure progress against sustainability objectives and make informed operational decisions. Combined with ongoing support, your waste management system continues to evolve alongside your business, delivering value long after the initial waste audit has been completed.

A robust waste management system pays off

We take the time to understand how your site runs, where waste is generated and how materials move through your processes before creating a waste management solution that works for you. By continually working with our suppliers and partners, we look for appropriate streams for materials that might otherwise find their way to landfill.

It can’t simply be business as usual when it comes to waste. But we also understand that your business still needs to run, maintain production, create jobs and contribute to the economy. That’s why our solutions are tailored around your operation. From identifying inefficiencies such as double handling and bottlenecks to improving sorting, collection and reporting, the aim is to make waste management work within your business rather than against it.

A waste management system designed around your business can contribute to its financial and day-to-day wellbeing while also reducing its impact on the environment.
